“Are we truly born only to die?” I groaned.

“Welcome to the human condition, Bub,” said Thundergun who was back on his feet, clutching his ribs. “Or the inhuman condition, in your case.”

“Our time upon this world is finite,” said Mother Justice. “Which means we must make the most of each moment granted to us. Do you want to live the remaining span of your life as a killer, or as a being capable of wisdom and mercy?”

I nodded slowly, weighing both paths.

“I shall spare him,” I said to Mother Justice.

“I knew you would. As for getting you to the island, we can arrange—”

“There’s no need,” I said, rising into the air. “Your thoughts are hidden, but your companions are open books. I see the location of the island in their minds. I can travel there under my own power.”

I glanced at Thundergun and Hummingbird, both of them battered and bloodied. I saw their broken bones and internal injuries caused by my attack. With all the medical knowledge of humanity flowing into me, I used my telekinesis to knit their bones, muscles and blood vessels back into proper order.

“Safe journey,” said Mother Justice. “I hope you’ll no longer feel alone once you reach the island!”

“Loneliness is my destiny,” I said to her as I hovered over the destroyed roof. “But, with my fellow atomic insects, perhaps there will be comfort in being alone, together.”

I turned my faceted eyes toward the west, seeing the distant Pacific in my mind’s eye. The wind roared across my carapace as I soared toward infinite possible futures.
